Noted among the oldest Shakti Peethas, the temple is sacred to Goddess Kamakhya, who is believed to be the essence of female energy. Legend has it, the yoni or creative organ of Sati fell here when Vishnu, in a bid to save the world from Shiva's tandavanrittya, cut her dead body into 51 pieces with his suddarshan chakra. The temple is a natural cave with a spring. There's no idol of the Goddess, rather an image of the yoni of the deity. Matra Yoni, draped in a silk sari and covered with flowers, is housed in the dark chamber of the temple. It is suggested to dress modestly while visiting the temple. • Shrimanta Shankardeva Kalakshetra- The Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Museum is a cultural institution located in the Panjabari area of Guwahati. The institution was established in the year 1998 with the purpose of promoting and conserving the local traditions of art, dance, music and drama. Today, it provides a platform for local artists to express their talent. Within the premises, the institution has a cultural museum, a library and a children’s park.
