Noted among the oldest Shakti Peethas, the temple is sacred to Goddess Kamakhya, who is believed to be the essence of female energy. Legend has it, the yoni or creative organ of Sati fell here when Vishnu, in a bid to save the world from Shiva's tandavanrittya, cut her dead body into 51 pieces with his suddarshan chakra. • The temple is a natural cave with a spring. There's no idol of the Goddess, rather an image of the yoni of the deity. Matra Yoni, draped in a silk sari and covered with flowers, is housed in the dark chamber of the temple.
